Forte Fit

Leave it to the experts to rock our world…

While I’d love to sell you on my own fitness tips, my name doesn’t carry as much weight as these heavy hitters (wait ‘till you see the names below).

It’s safe to say there’s a reason they do this thing for a living and picking the “best” advice from this bunch was no easy task. So, we’ve kept things short and sweet, but we’ve also linked up additional resources if you’d like to dive deeper into the world of your favorite fitness experts (I’ve been conducting the Todd Durkin train for years now).

Let’s get started:

#1. There’s no secret formula. – Ronnie Coleman

Credentials: 8-time Mr. Olympia.

Commentary: Too many people search for the perfect plan, program, or routine, and end up stuck with paralysis by analysis. I’d know because I’ve been there. Once you accept there’s no secret formula, any exercise will do. And let’s be honest; anything is always better than nothing. This advice comes from a guy who makes his money by working out; if he says there’s no secret formula, there’s no secret formula.

#2. Strive to be strong from feet to fingertips. – Todd Durkin

Credentials: Celebrity trainer who works with the likes of Drew Brees and Natalie Jill.

Commentary: Durkin goes on to suggest training in all three planes of motion while working your entire body. That’s not athletes-only advice. Whether you need to stop skipping leg day or start incorporating unilateral (single-leg / arm) and transverse plane (rotational) movements into your routine, your fitness foundation requires full-body work. Here’s more of Durkin’s Top Training Tips.

#3. Don’t drag your feet. – Jillian Michaels

Credentials: Personal trainer-turned-superstar as The Biggest Loser’s larger-than-life personality.

Commentary: While this article dives deep on Michaels’ weight loss-specific tips, this simple advice can be applied across the board. There’s certainly no perfect time to start, so stop waiting and start sweating. And once you are at the gym or pressing play, work hard. While Michaels is an advocate of high intensity interval training, your body will always benefit from effort, intensity, and pace.

#4. Schedule your workouts like you schedule meetings. – Autumn Calabrese

Credentials: Beachbody Super Trainer known her 21 Day Fix program.

Commentary: Excuses are like… Fine. We won’t go there. Everyone has excuses. Stop stalling and make your workouts a non-negotiable part of your day. It may require getting up at the crack of dawn (I pull up to the gym at 5am) or trading your lunch break for a sweat sesh, but in the grand scheme of things, isn’t your health most important? Here’s more from Calabrese.

#5. When you work out, you want to continually push your body in different ways. – Kayla Itsines

Credentials: Instagram sensation (8 million+ followers, but who’s counting?) known for her Bikini Body Guides.

Commentary: While Itsines clearly has a niche, her advice here transcends her target demographic. Regardless of the tools and trainer, you need to constantly challenge your body in new ways for results. Muscle confusion is magic and a diverse list of exercises offers a plethora of challenges for your body and mind to react and adapt to.

#6. Consistency has so much more to do with it than anything else. – Tony Horton

Credentials: P90X. Enough said.

Commentary: I’m sick of people complaining about lack of results after a few weeks of exercise. You may work out three times per week, but there’s four other days you’re off. That’s certainly enough to elicit results, but only over an extended time period. Keep in mind, you may have months, years, or even decades of exercise avoidance you’re trying to make up for. 12 workouts in a month can’t make up for 365 days of couch surfing. Consistency is key. As always, Horton has plenty more words of wisdom to share here.

P.S. One thing all of the experts above touched on is goals. Without them, you’ll get off track. With them, there’s a purpose to your workouts. Here’s my free blueprint to help you set achievable fitness goals.
